The Danger of Moving Too Fast

September 25, 2008 categories:  Christian Articles, Spiritual Warfare

“I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run.  I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.  But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. ” (Exodus 23:27-30)

In this text, God has promised to send an angel before the Children of Israel to lead the way to the place that God has prepared.  The Israelites had been given a definitive and profound destination, a destiny if you will.  The point that I wish to make today about these verses is that God, in his mercy, didn’t give Israel their destiny all at once.

“But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.”

It’s interesting to note that the children of Israel needed to go through a season of increase before they would be able to properly administer their destiny.  Of course, the increase spoken of in this text is a numerical increase, but I believe that it holds spiritual significance.

God has indeed called you to something.  Don’t be discouraged because it isn’t happening as fast as you would like.  God isn’t picking on you, He’s being merciful.  If he were to turn you loose in your destiny today, the proverbial wild animals in your promised land would have their way with you.  In other words, there are specific challenges that only you can meet that will enable you to take possession of your destiny in the appropriate season.  However, between now and then, you need a season of increase so that you will be able to handle the responsibility.

Don’t be surprised if God removes those barriers to your destiny, little by little, while you go through the process of spiritual increase.  It’s for your own good. Take the time to develop your beast killing skills.

Spiritual Warfare: Total War

April 2, 2008 categories:  Spiritual Warfare

Burning Village“Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.” (Acts 5:14-16)

During the American Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman implemented a new style of warfare. It came to be known as the “scorched earth” tactic, a component of the broader strategy of “total war.” Total war was designed to bring a country to its knees by destroying everything in sight….economy, cities, farms, villages, everything. It proved to be a very effective strategy indeed, undermining the will of the enemy to continue to fight.

Spiritual Warfare: Occupy the Land

March 28, 2008 categories:  Spiritual Warfare

River Jordan“Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.” (Joshua 6:1-2)

Joshua chapter 6 begins with the Children of Israel having just finished crossing the river Jordan. The Lord had delivered them, as promised. Now, a vast, unconquered land lay before them. It was theirs, to be sure. The Lord had promised it to them. But the task of conquering the land still remained.

I’ve heard the river Jordan compared to a lot of situations in our lives. For now, let’s use it as a metaphor for deliverance. That is, the crossing of the river Jordan for the Children of Israel is symbolic of your salvation experience. Here’s the point that I want to make:

Spiritual Warfare: The Field Manual

February 16, 2008 categories:  Spiritual Warfare

Field Manual“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”(2 Timothy 3:16)

Perhaps no other task rivals training in terms of importance for an Army preparing for war. Tactics, developed over many years of trial and error, are refined and drilled into the troops until they are second nature.

There is, however, a fundamental problem with this model of preparation for warfare. Armies often train with the tactics developed during the last war, only to find that the new enemy is vastly different and that the tactics must again be modified in order to be effective. For instance, the jungle tactics developed in Vietnam were trained extensively throughout the decades following that war. However, when war in Iraq broke out, the Army discovered that jungle warfare was vastly different from desert warfare, and changed their training regiments accordingly.
